PrizePicks Regains New York Access via Peer-to-Peer Fantasy License
The New York State Gaming Commission has granted PrizePicks an interactive daily fantasy license, allowing the operator to relaunch operations in the state. This approval marks the company's return after a mandated exit in 2024 due to restrictions on certain contest formats. New York becomes the 16th jurisdiction to endorse PrizePicks' peer-to-peer model, signaling a regulatory pivot toward skill-based competitions.
Regulatory Crackdown and Resolution
PrizePicks withdrew from New York in 2024 when authorities prohibited against-the-house, pick’em-style contests, which regulators viewed as unlicensed wagering. The Atlanta-based firm then settled for US$15 million with the commission over operations conducted without approval from June 2019 to December 2023, with the penalty linked directly to revenue generated during that period. Licensing followed in October 2025, clearing the path for compliant entry under the state's framework for interactive fantasy activities.
Launch of PrizePicks Arena
The relaunch centers on PrizePicks Arena, a peer-to-peer platform where participants compete directly against each other rather than wagering against the operator. This structure aligns with regulatory preferences for contests emphasizing skill over chance, distinguishing them from traditional house-banked wagering. By adopting this model nationwide after the New York restrictions, PrizePicks has positioned itself to navigate varying state rules on fantasy platforms.
Ownership Shift and Market Expansion
European lottery operator Allwyn acquired a 62.3% stake in PrizePicks, establishing new majority ownership in a deal valuing the company at roughly US$1.5 billion, inclusive of potential earnouts. Amid this transition, PrizePicks pursues diversification into event contract trading through partnerships with Kalshi and Polymarket, integrating such contracts into its application. New York regulators now reevaluate prediction market licensing, reflecting broader scrutiny of these emerging financial instruments.
